Della Collins, Eastern Steamship Company Wharf, Kennebec River, Hallowell, ca. 1890
Contributed by Hubbard Free LibraryDescription
The Della Collins replaced the Clarian in 1879 as the shuttle between Augusta, Hallowell and the Boston steamer in Gardiner. Named after Captain Collins's daughter, the little steamer had a very shallow draft. This made her difficult to maneuver in the Kennebec River current, but locals claimed she could sail over a dew covered field as well as in the river. The Della Collins was replaced by the new steamer City of Augusta in 1905.
