Description
Eliza Clark Lowell was a direct descendant of Deacon Pease Clark who was the first settler in what is now Hallowell. She lost her husband at sea shortly before her only child was born. Her son died at age 35 and she inherited his estate. In 1897 she donated $10,000 for the second addition to the Hubbard Free Library and attended the dedication the next year at the age of 97. Eliza then donated $20,000 to build a new City Hall. She said, "Build it strong that it may last for years to come." Unfortunately Eliza Clark Lowell died shortly before the building was dedicated in 1898. City Hall was renovated for its 100th anniversary in 1998 through a partnership between Row House, Inc., and the City of Hallowell.
