Hallowell viewed from Butternut Park, Chelsea, ca. 1890
Contributed by Hubbard Free LibraryDescription
This ca. 1890 view shows the Hallowell waterfront and downtown business district, as seen from Butternut Park on the Chelsea side of the Kennebec River. On the Hallowell side are the backs of Water Street business buildings and three church steeples in the distance. In the foreground is the Chelsea boat landing, from which a ferry connected the two shores for many years, after the demise of the Hallowell-Chelsea Bridge which was destroyed by a February 1870 flood.
